Cook the elbow pasta as per the package directions to al dente state. Once cooked, drain and set aside.

In a pan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic and chopped fresh mushrooms. Saute them until the onions are translucent and mushrooms are soft.

Sprinkle the flour over the onion and mushroom mixture, stir well and cook for about a minute to get rid of the raw flour taste.

Gradually add milk while stirring continuously to avoid lumps and cook until the sauce thickens.

Turn off the heat. Add the tuna, frozen peas and a 1/2 cup of sharp white cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper then stir well until the cheese melts.

Lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan and transfer the pasta mixture into it.

In a separate pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and toast the breadcrumbs until golden brown. Sprinkle the toasted breadcrumbs over the pasta.

Bake for about 30 minutes or until bubbling and the cheese on top is nicely melted and slightly golden.
