Expiration & Storage Tips
When does dried apricot expire?
Dried apricots typically last for about 6-12 months past the date printed on their package if unopened and stored in a cool, dry place. Once the package has been opened, it's best to consume the apricots within one month, though if properly stored in a refrigerator, they can last for up to 6 months. If the apricots are kept in a freezer, they can extend the storage period up to 12-18 months.
How do you tell if dried apricot is bad?
Spoiled dried apricots may develop mold, usually seen as white, blue, or green spots on the surface. You might also notice an off-smell or change in color. If the apricots are unusually sticky or hard, it's another sign that the fruit has lost its freshness. Remember, it's always better to be safe than sorry. If in doubt, throw it out!
Tips for storing dried apricot to extend shelf life
• After opening, it's best to keep dried apricots in the refrigerator in an airtight container or bag. This prevents exposure to moisture and humid air that can accelerate spoilage.
• If you've bought in bulk, portion the apricots into smaller packages and only open one at a time. This keeps the rest of the apricots from losing freshness.
• Freezing is a great option for long-term storage. Spread the apricots out on a baking sheet, freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag and pull out as much air as possible before sealing.
• Avoid storing dried apricots near spices, onions or garlic as they can absorb strong smells.
