Expiration & Storage Tips
When does dried pineapple expire?
Your unopened package of dried pineapple should last about 6-12 months past the printed date on the package if it's stored in a cool, dry place. If the dried pineapple has been opened, it's usually best to consume it within 1-2 weeks, although it may still be safe to eat for up to a month if properly stored. Freezing is not a common method of storage for dried fruits but is possible. If frozen, dried pineapple may last up to 12-18 months.
How do you tell if dried pineapple is bad?
Dried pineapple is spoiled if it has fungus or mold, or if there's an unusual smell. Fungal and mold growth may look like small fuzzy spots and will change the texture of the pineapple to a mushier consistency. If it smells stale, sour or off in any way, it may have gone bad. Also, if it tastes odd or not as sweet as usual, it's likely spoiled.
Tips for storing dried pineapple to extend shelf life
• Store in an airtight container or resealable bag to keep it from absorbing moisture from the air.
• Keep in a dark, cool place. The pantry or a cupboard is ideal, but avoid areas that get particularly warm or humid.
• After opening, try to consume as soon as possible for best texture and flavor.
• If you decide to freeze it, ensure it is well-sealed to prevent freezer burn and best preserve its taste and texture.
• To rehydrate dried pineapple for use in cooking, soak it in hot water for about 15-20 minutes. Be sure to discard any unused water.
