Expiration & Storage Tips
When does duck fat expire?
Duck fat is known for its long shelf life. Unopened, it can stay good for up to 2 years if stored properly. Once opened, it should be used within 3 to 4 months for the best quality but is safe to use for up to 6 months. If frozen properly, duck fat can last up to a year.
How do you tell if duck fat is bad?
If the duck fat has gone bad, you'll notice several changes. There may be mold growth, which can be green or brownish. The texture of the fat might become lumpy, rather than smooth, and it might also develop a rancid or sour smell. In terms of taste, if it has a metallic or off taste, it also indicates that it's time to discard the fat.
Tips for storing duck fat to extend shelf life
• Store the duck fat in a tightly sealed container. Glass jars with airtight lids are a good option.
• Keep it in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard that's away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
• If you choose to refrigerate it, remember to bring it up to room temperature before use to make it easier to spoon out.
• For longer storage, freezing duck fat is an excellent option. Freeze it in smaller portion sizes so you can easily take out what you need without thawing the whole container.
