Expiration & Storage Tips
When does sour cherry expire?
Fresh sour cherries can last for about 2 to 4 days in the fridge. If you've got a basket from the market, try to consume them within this timeframe. You can extend their life to about a year if frozen. Bear in mind that the printed expiration date on pre-packaged sour cherries may vary, so it's best to follow the guidelines from the packaging. Once opened, any preserved or canned sour cherries should be eaten within one week.
How do you tell if sour cherry is bad?
If you're unfamiliar with sour cherries, don't worry, it's pretty straightforward to tell if they've gone bad. Firstly, look at them. If they have mold spots, dark patches or wrinkles, it's best to throw them out. Their skin should be bright and crisp. Secondly, smell – sour cherries have a refreshing, fruity aroma. If they smell rancid, off, or lack any scent, it's best not to consume them. Lastly, touch. Fresh sour cherries have a firm texture. If they are squishy or mushy, that's a telltale sign they're overripe or rotten.
Tips for storing sour cherry to extend shelf life
• Don't wash your sour cherries until you're ready to eat them. Extra moisture can lead to molding.
• Store sour cherries in a sealable, airtight container or bag in the fridge. This will help keep them fresh and prevent absorption of other odors.
• Are you not going to use all your sour cherries in time? Consider freezing them. Pit them first, then spread them out on a baking sheet to freeze. Once frozen, transfer them into a freezer-safe bag.
• Keep an eye on your fruit! Try to check your sour cherries daily for any signs of spoilage or mold, and remove any that are starting to go bad to prevent it from spreading to the others.
