Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Cilantro Lime Rice expire?
Unopened, a package of cilantro lime rice, if commercially packaged, should retain its quality upwards of one year past the printed date on the package. However, once opened, the cilantro lime rice should ideally be consumed within 2 days, if stored in the refrigerator. If the rice is homemade, it should be eaten within 4-6 days, and if frozen, it may last up to 6 months.
How do you tell if Cilantro Lime Rice is bad?
Spoiled cilantro lime rice will usually have a drier texture and lack the characteristic fresh aroma of cilantro and lime. It may also change color or develop a mouldy appearance. If you sense any unusual smell or see a change in color or texture, it's a strong sign that it has gone bad. Additionally, if stored for a long period, the lime flavor can turn bitter.
Tips for storing Cilantro Lime Rice to extend shelf life
• Using an airtight container will help to maintain freshness and prevent contamination.
• Do not leave cooked rice at room temperature for more than two hours. If it's not consumed immediately, store it in the fridge as soon as it cools down.
• For longer storage periods, consider freezing the rice. Divide the rice into meal-size portions and store in freezer-safe bags or containers.
• Reheat only the amount of rice you plan to eat to prevent continuous warming and cooling which can lead to bacterial growth.
