Expiration & Storage Tips
When does smoked salmon expire?
Unopened smoked salmon can last up to 2 weeks in the fridge-if it’s properly stored at or below 38°F. Once opened, it should be consumed within a week. Smoked salmon can also be frozen to extend its shelf life. When frozen, the smoked salmon can last about six months. But remember, when you defrost it, consume it within a couple of days for best taste and quality.
How do you tell if smoked salmon is bad?
You can tell if smoked salmon has gone off by its smell, texture and color. Fresh smoked salmon should have a smoky, fresh sea smell. If it smells sour, foul or fishy, it's likely spoiled. When touched, the salmon should be slightly springy. If it's slimy or sticky, that's a sign it's gone bad. Finally, color is also a good indicator. Fresh smoked salmon is a bright pink or red. If you notice any dullness or discoloration, it's best to discard it.
Tips for storing smoked salmon to extend shelf life
• Store the smoked salmon in the coldest part of your refrigerator as soon as you bring it home.
• Unopened, pre-packaged smoked salmon can be kept in its original packaging. However, once you open the package, make sure to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or put it in an airtight container. This will not only prevent it from drying out but also prevent it from absorbing odors from other foods.
• If you want to freeze the smoked salmon, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then put it in a freezer bag. Make sure you squeeze out as much air as possible before sealing the bag.
• When defrosting, move the salmon to the refrigerator and let it thaw slowly for best flavor and texture. Avoid thawing it quickly at room temperature as this could lead to bacterial growth.
