Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Shrimp Salad expire?
Shrimp salad, whether store-bought or homemade, should ideally be consumed within two days of its preparation. The salad will stay fresh for longer when kept in the refrigerator, which may extend its life up to 3-4 days at top. Freezing shrimp salad is not commonly done and not recommended because the quality, texture and taste may be vastly compromised upon thawing.
How do you tell if Shrimp Salad is bad?
Checking if shrimp salad has gone bad can be done by sight, smell, and taste. If you notice changes in its color, it's often a sign that it's starting to spoil. The lettuce and other veggies will start to wilt and maybe even darken. Foul or off-putting smells are another red flag. Shrimp that's gone bad often has a strong, fishy smell. Tasting is a last resort check; if it tastes sour or off, it's time to throw it away.
Tips for storing Shrimp Salad to extend shelf life
• Keep your shrimp salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This will not only keep it fresh for longer, but also prevent it from contaminating other foods.
• Ideally, store the salad in the coldest part of your refrigerator, often at the back, and not on the door, to maintain a consistent cool temperature.
• Avoid leaving shrimp salad at room temperature for more than two hours. This can accelerate the growth of bacteria and spoil the salad quicker.
• If you want to extend the salad's freshness when dining, maybe consider serving it on a bed of ice.
