Expiration & Storage Tips
When does crispy rice cereal expire?
Unopened, a box of crispy rice cereal can last 6-8 months past the 'best by' date printed on the package. Once opened, the cereal will retain its best quality for about 2-3 months, but can be safe to eat longer if it's stored correctly. If the cereal is frozen, it can last up to a year.
How do you tell if crispy rice cereal is bad?
It's pretty straightforward to tell if your crispy rice cereal has gone bad. The first sign will be the texture. If the cereal has absorbed moisture and isn't crispy anymore but rather, soft or chewy, it's time to throw it out. Another sign to look for is color. If the grains have turned darker, that can be an indication of rancidity. Also, have a sniff. Any off odors mean the cereal is no good. Remember: when in doubt, throw it out!
Tips for storing crispy rice cereal to extend shelf life
• Keep the cereal in a cool, dry place. Pantry shelves are an ideal location.
• To prolong the shelf life of opened cereal, make sure to squeeze as much air out of the bag as possible before closing it back up.
• Consider using a clip or a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid to further prevent air exposure.
• If you buy cereal in bulk or just want to extend its shelf life, freeze it! Use freezer-safe containers or bags, squeezing out as much air as possible before sealing.
