Expiration & Storage Tips
When does gouda cheese expire?
On average, a properly stored block of Gouda cheese can last three to four weeks once opened, while unopened packages can last up to six months past the printed date on the package if stored in the refrigerator. If you choose to freeze your Gouda, it can extend its lifespan up to an additional six months. However, bear in mind it may alter the taste and texture. In fact, the flavor can become a little more intense after freezing.
How do you tell if gouda cheese is bad?
Good Gouda should boast a light creamy color. The cheese has gone bad if you notice patches of mold that are not a part of the original cheese. Also, a sure sign of spoilage is a strong sour or unpleasantly sharp smell. The texture can also be a hint; if it becomes extremely hard or dry, then the cheese is not good to eat anymore. However, if it’s just a small spot of mold, you can cut that part off and the rest of the cheese should be fine to eat.
Tips for storing gouda cheese to extend shelf life
• Store Gouda cheese in the lower part of the refrigerator as it's usually the coolest area.
• Wrap the cheese in wax paper or parchment paper, and then loosely in aluminum foil or a plastic bag. This allows the cheese to breathe while still maintaining moisture.
• If you choose to freeze gouda cheese, grate it or cut it into small chunks before freezing. It will thaw more evenly this way. To defrost, transfer it into refrigerator and let it thaw slowly.
• Avoid storing cheese with strong-smelling foods. As a high-fat food, cheese can absorb other flavors quite easily so it’s best to keep them separate.
