Expiration & Storage Tips
When does fruit syrup expire?
Unopened fruit syrup can last for about 12-18 months kept in a cool, dry place, such as a pantry; this timeframe starts from the printed date on the package. However, once opened, the fruit syrup needs to be refrigerated and will maintain its quality for about 6 months. If you choose to freeze it, it can preserve its quality up to a year or even longer, and can be enjoyed even beyond this period, maintaining safety but possibly losing a bit of flavor over time.
How do you tell if fruit syrup is bad?
While fruit syrup has a relatively long shelf life, it can eventually spoil. A clear sign is a color change, as the syrup might darken significantly or appear somewhat cloudy. Mold growth is another obvious indicator that it has gone bad. In terms of smell and taste, if the typically sweet and fruity smell is replaced by a bitter or sour aroma, or if it tastes off or fermented, it's time to discard the bottle.
Tips for storing fruit syrup to extend shelf life
• Always make sure you tightly seal the bottle or container after use to avoid any air or contaminants getting in. The longer it's exposed to air, the quicker it can spoil.
• Always use a clean spoon when dispensing the syrup to prevent introducing bacteria that could cause it to spoil faster.
• Store the syrup in its original bottle, if possible. These bottles are designed to best maintain the freshness and flavor of the syrup.
• Keep your fruit syrup in the fridge after opening. This slows down the growth of any potential spoilage bacteria.
• If freezing, pour syrup into a freezer-friendly container, leaving some space at the top as the syrup will expand upon freezing. To use, simply defrost it in the fridge overnight.
