Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Tahini Sauce expire?
Unopened tahini sauce can be kept in a cool, dark place and typically lasts for about 2 years. The 'best by' or 'use by' date on the package is merely the manufacturer's estimate of when the product will be at its best quality, not when it will become harmful. However, after opening, tahini sauce should be kept refrigerated and used within a month for best taste. If frozen, tahini sauce should be consumed within six months.
How do you tell if Tahini Sauce is bad?
Tahini sauce that has gone bad will exhibit a noticeable change in color, turning darker than the typical light beige. It may also develop a slightly sour or off smell and can potentially develop a layer of mould. A change in taste is another telltale sign; it may taste bitter compared to the usual nutty and slightly savory flavor.
Tips for storing Tahini Sauce to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate an opened jar of tahini sauce immediately after use.
• Keep the lid tightly closed when not using to prevent the introduction of moisture and bacteria.
• Use clean, dry utensils for serving to avoid contamination.
• If you want to store tahini sauce longer, you can freeze it. However, it may separate and need to be stirred before using. Thaw the tahini in the fridge, then give it a good stir to merge the oils and the paste back together.
