Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Falafel expire?
Unopened packaged falafel mix or pre-cooked falafel can be stored in your pantry until the printed expiration date on the packaging. Once opened, falafel mix should be used within 6 months, while pre-cooked falafel can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Homemade falafel balls taste best when consumed fresh, but can be refrigerated for up to 5 days. For longer storage, freezing cooked falafel is also an option; it can last up to 6 months.
How do you tell if Falafel is bad?
If the falafel has a sour or off-putting smell, that's an indicator it's gone bad. Discoloration or a slimy texture may also be warning signs. In case of mold, it's best to discard the entire batch.
Tips for storing Falafel to extend shelf life
• Store opened falafel mix in a cool, dry place. Seal it tightly to avoid moisture.
• For pre-cooked or homemade falafel, store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness.
• Refrigerated falafel that's not consumed within 5 days can be frozen. Place them individually on a baking sheet, freeze, and then store in a freezer bag or container to prevent them from sticking together.
• Defrost frozen falafel in the refrigerator overnight, or warm up directly in the oven or microwave.
