Expiration & Storage Tips
When does pickled onion expire?
Pickled onions generally have a good shelf-life due to the preservation properties of vinegar. Unopened jars of pickled onions should last around one to two years past their printed date when stored properly. Once a jar is opened, the pickled onions should be used within two to three months if kept in the fridge. If you freeze pickled onions, which isn't a common storage method but can prolong its shelf life when necessary - they can stay safe to use indefinitely, although the texture and flavor may start to degrade after about a year.
How do you tell if pickled onion is bad?
Spoilage signs in pickled onions are similar to those in many preserved foods. Cloudy brine, an off smell, or if the onions become mushy, slimy or discolored are signs that they have gone bad. If the jar is bulging, leaking, or if it spurts liquid upon being opened, these are indications that dangerous bacteria may be present and the pickled onions should not be consumed.
Tips for storing pickled onion to extend shelf life
• Always store your unopened jar of pickled onions in a cool, dark place—like a pantry or cabinet—away from heat or direct sunlight.
• After opening, ensure to refrigerate the pickled onions and to always keep them covered in their pickling liquid to preserve their flavor and texture.
• Check that the jar's lid is on tightly before putting it back in the fridge. This prevents air from entering the jar, which can cause the onions to spoil quicker.
• While it's not a common method, you can freeze pickled onions in a freezer-safe container for long-term storage. When you want to use them again, thaw in the fridge overnight.
• If freezing, leave some space at the top of the container because the liquid will expand as it freezes.
