Expiration & Storage Tips
When does whipped topping expire?
Store-bought whipped topping typically lasts for about 2 weeks in the refrigerator after opened, while unopened cans or tubs will last until the printed date, which is usually about a year from the purchase date. Once opened, it should be used within 7-10 days for best freshness. On the other hand, homemade whipped topping should be used within 2 to 3 days. Lastly, if you choose to freeze whipped topping, it will extend its life to about 2 months.
How do you tell if whipped topping is bad?
If whipped topping has gone bad, it will often take on a rancid smell which is not normal for this kind of food product. You may also notice that it has begun to separate or water has started to form around the edge of the container. In some cases, it may develop mold, in which case it should be immediately discarded. It's always safe to trust your instincts, if it doesn't look or smell right, it's probably not safe to consume.
Tips for storing whipped topping to extend shelf life
• Store whipped topping in the refrigerator at or below 40° F in an airtight container to keep it fresh longer.
• If you have leftover whipped topping, it can be frozen. However, it may lose some of its fluffy texture. To prepare it for freezing, place the whipped topping in a sealed freezer-safe container or bag. When you're ready to use it, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight.
• Avoid frequently opening the container as it introduces air and temperature variations that can accelerate spoilage.
• Don’t store your whipped topping on the refrigerator door, as this area experiences the most temperature fluctuation, which can shorten its shelf life.
• If storing homemade whipped topping, ensure to consume it within 2-3 days and keep it refrigerated.
