Expiration & Storage Tips
When does tomato juice expire?
Unopened, tomato juice can typically last between 12-18 months in the pantry if stored correctly. After opening the product, it generally remains good for about 5-7 days in the refrigerator. If the juice was frozen, it can last up to 6 months in the freezer but after defrosting it should be consumed within a few days.
How do you tell if tomato juice is bad?
There are a few telltale signs that tomato juice has spoiled. If the juice develops a funky or sour smell, has visible mold, is murky or has a strange taste, it's best to throw it out. The container might also bulge or leak which indicates bacterial activity – a clear sign that it's time to discard the juice.
Tips for storing tomato juice to extend shelf life
• Store unopened tomato juice in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
• After opening, refrigerate the tomato juice in a tightly sealed container. Glass containers are best as plastic or metal can alter the flavor of the juice.
• If you want to extend the shelf-life further, you can freeze the juice. Pour it into a freezer-safe container, leaving some space at the top as the juice will expand when frozen. When you're ready to use it, allow it to thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
• Remember the 'first in, first out' principle. Always use older products first to ensure nothing goes out of date.
