Expiration & Storage Tips
When does beet juice expire?
In a refrigerator, an unopened bottle of store-bought beet juice can last up to 2 weeks if stored correctly. However, once you've opened the bottle, it should stay fresh for about 2-5 days. Now, if you've made fresh beet juice at home, it should ideally be consumed right away, but it can last for 24-48 hours if kept in the fridge. Beet juice can also be frozen, extending its shelf life to about six months but the taste is likely to change when it does thaw out.
How do you tell if beet juice is bad?
If the beet juice has gone bad, it may develop a sour smell or taste indicative of fermentation. Another clear indicator is the color. Fresh beet juice has a vibrant, dark pinkish-red color while aged or expired juice can appear darker and less vibrant. If you see mold, cloudy strands, or the juice has a fizzy feel or taste, these can be signs of spoilage and it's best then to discard the juice.
Tips for storing beet juice to extend shelf life
• Always refrigerate your beet juice. It will spoil quickly if left at room temperature.
• Store beet juice in an airtight container or bottle. Exposure to oxygen starts the degradation of nutrients and favors the growth of spoiling bacteria.
• If you've made fresh beet juice, consider drinking it right away for the best taste and nutrition.
• If you need to store beet juice for longer periods, freezing is an option. Just remember to leave some space in the container for the juice to expand as it freezes, and consume it as soon as it's thawed to maintain the best taste.
