Expiration & Storage Tips
When does tabasco expire?
Tabasco, like many hot sauces, is remarkably shelf-stable due to the high vinegar content which acts as a natural preservative. An unopened bottle of Tabasco can last up to 5 years, stored in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, a bottle can keep for about 18 months if kept in the refrigerator. Unlike many condiments, Tabasco can even be used for a period after the printed expiry date, though the flavor intensity may decrease over time.
How do you tell if tabasco is bad?
While Tabasco doesn't spoil in the traditional sense, it can 'lose its kick'. You'll notice the flavor becomes less pungent and more acidic, indicating that it has past its prime. This is not harmful, just less flavorful. Also, if you see any weird stuff like mold, dark specks floating, or anything else unusual, then it's probably time to toss the bottle.
Tips for storing tabasco to extend shelf life
• Always keep your opened bottle of Tabasco sauce in the refrigerator after opening, to maintain its quality and sharpness.
• Avoid using dirty or wet spoons to scoop the hot sauce, as introducing bacteria or extra water can promote spoilage.
• For prolonged storage, you could even freeze Tabasco sauce in small quantities ('hot sauce cubes') and use them as needed, though doing so might slightly affect the texture once thawed.
• Avoid exposing your Tabasco to high heat or direct sunlight, as this could affect its overall quality and flavor intensity.
