Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Almond Cake expire?
An unopened store-bought almond cake can last up to two weeks if kept in a cool, dry area. After opening, it remains good for about 5 to 7 days if stored properly. Homemade almond cakes generally have a shorter shelf life, usually around 2 to 3 days at room temperature due to lack of preservatives. Freezing can greatly extend its life; an almond cake can last for a month or two in the freezer.
How do you tell if Almond Cake is bad?
The primary clues are to first notice how the cake smells. If it has an off or rancid smell, it's a clear sign it has spoiled. Secondly, look for visual signs of mold. If any is visible, discard the cake immediately. Lastly, if the cake feels unusually hard or dry, it may indicate staleness and be less appealing to eat, but isn't harmful.
Tips for storing Almond Cake to extend shelf life
• To keep your almond cake freshest, store it in an airtight container at room temperature. Avoid storing it in the refrigerator as it can cause the cake to partly dry out.
• If you want to freeze the almond cake, ensure it's completely cooled before wrapping in cling film, then foil, and then place in a freezer-safe bag or container. This double wrapping will avoid freezer burn.
• To defrost, remove from the freezer and let it come to room temperature slowly, still wrapped to avoid condensation which could render it soggy.
• If only eating a portion of the cake, cut slices from the middle instead of the end for the remaining cake to retain moisture and remain fresh for longer.
