In a blender, combine the chopped tomatoes and fresh basil leaves. Blend until smooth, creating your base tomato sauce.

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a generous amount of salt. Once boiling, add the whole wheat penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve one cup of pasta water for later and then drain the rest.
