Expiration & Storage Tips
When does pistachio pudding expire?
Pistachio pudding has varying shelf lives depending on its type. An unopened package of commercially-prepared pudding can last for about 12-18 months stored in a cool, dry place, but do cross-check with the printed expiration date on the package. Once opened or homemade, its lifespan contracts to 3-4 days when refrigerated. If you decide to freeze it, expect it to last up to 1-2 months. Always remember though, the freezing can alter the texture slightly upon thawing!
How do you tell if pistachio pudding is bad?
Check for a change in the color of the pudding- if it starts to develop dark or green spots, it's a mold and the pudding has gone bad. The smell will also give it away - a foul, sour or overly sweet and fermenting smell is not a good sign. Lastly, if the pudding starts to lose its creamy texture and becomes watery, it's time to toss it out.
Tips for storing pistachio pudding to extend shelf life
• Keep it refrigerated at all times, especially after you've opened the package or made it at home.
• Store in an air-tight container. Exposure to air can lead to drying out and formation of a lurking mold.
• If you decide to freeze it, put it in a freezer-safe container leaving some headspace for it to expand as it freezes.
• Avoid keeping it in the refrigerator door because the temperature fluctuates there. Place it in the main body of the fridge for safekeeping.
• If made homemade, cool it down at room temperature before storing it in the fridge. A quick transition from hot to cold can lead to condensation causing it to turn bad quickly.
