Expiration & Storage Tips
When does custard powder expire?
Unopened custard powder can last a fairly long time, usually about 2 to 3 years past the printed date on the package, as long as it's stored in a cool, dry place. Once the package has been opened, it should ideally be used within six months. However, if you can't use it all within this time, it can still be safe for consumption for up to a year, assuming proper storage conditions. Custard powder is typically not frozen in households, as freezing does not extend its shelf life.
How do you tell if custard powder is bad?
Spoiled custard powder may exhibit a few clear signs. Check for any changes in color, texture and smell. If the powder has clumped together, it's likely that moisture has gotten into the packet, which can lead to spoilage. Discoloration or an off smell can also be clear indicators. When in doubt, it's safer to discard the powder.
Tips for storing custard powder to extend shelf life
• Keep the custard powder in an airtight container to protect it from moisture and air.
• Store the container in a cool, dry and dark place such as a pantry or cupboard. Avoid places with temperature fluctuations like above the stove or near the dishwasher.
• After each use, make sure to tightly seal the custard powder container.
• Never use wet utensils in the powder to avoid introducing moisture to the powder.
