Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Gingerbread Cookie expire?
Gingerbread cookies, when properly stored, can have a remarkably long shelf-life. Unopened and stored at room temperature in its original packaging, gingerbread cookies can last up to about 2 months. Once the cookies have been opened, they should ideally be enjoyed within 2-3 weeks. If you've made your own gingerbread cookies at home, they are at their best within 1 week. As for freezing, gingerbread cookies stand up quite well and can be frozen for up to 3 months.
How do you tell if Gingerbread Cookie is bad?
First, inspect them visually. If they have mold, discolorations, or appear slimy or damp, discard them immediately. If the visual inspection checks out, smell them. Gingerbread cookies should smell pleasantly spicy and sweet. If they emit an off or sour smell, it's best to throw them away. Another telling sign is the texture. If your gingerbread cookies are soft and not crisp, they've likely become stale and while not harmful to eat, their quality is significantly degraded.
Tips for storing Gingerbread Cookie to extend shelf life
• Always store gingerbread cookies in a cool, dry place. A pantry or cupboard can be perfect.
• Use an airtight container for storage. This protects from air exposure that can hasten staleness or encourage mold.
• If freezing, wrap each cookie individually in plastic wrap, then place them in a sealable freezer bag. This helps to prevent freezer burn and retain flavor.
• For optimal freshness after freezing, thaw gingerbread cookies overnight in the refrigerator before bringing them to room temperature.
• Adding a slice of white bread, a marshmallow, or a piece of apple into the cookie container can help keep the cookies soft and chewy.
