Expiration & Storage Tips
When does coffee liqueur expire?
Unopened bottles of coffee liqueur on average keep well for about 10 to 12 months when stored at room temperature and away from light and heat. Keep in mind that this timeframe is a rough estimate and the actual shelf life can vary depending on the brand and quality of your liqueur. Once the coffee liqueur bottle has been opened, it's still good for about 6 months if stored properly, but its quality will start to decline gradually. As for homemade coffee liqueur, it's best consumed within 1 month due to lack of preservatives. Freezing coffee liqueur isn't a common practice since it can change the quality and taste of the drink.
How do you tell if coffee liqueur is bad?
Coffee liqueur is pretty durable, but when it has gone bad, the first thing you might notice is a change in its aroma. The welcoming and rich essence of coffee might turn dull, stale, or have a slight off-smell. Another indication is the change in flavor. If it tastes somewhat sour or has lost its sweet and robust coffee flavor, then it's most likely gone bad. Lastly, if there are signs of mold, discoloration, or sedimentation at the bottom of the bottle, these are definite signs that your coffee liqueur should not be consumed.
Tips for storing coffee liqueur to extend shelf life
• Always store your coffee liqueur bottle in a cool, dark place away from light and heat. A pantry or cabinet could be just right.
• After using, ensure the cap or cork is tightly secured to prevent air from getting in and affecting the taste and quality of the liqueur.
• Always handle your coffee liqueur with clean hands and use clean utensils if you're pouring it to avoid introducing any bacteria that could spoil it.
• In case you've made more than what was needed, consider storing the rest in smaller, airtight bottles. This reduces the amount of air contact and may help increase its shelf life slightly.
