Expiration & Storage Tips
When does corn chips expire?
When unopened, a bag of corn chips can typically last for about 2-3 months beyond the date printed on the package. Once opened, they're best when eaten within 1-2 weeks. However, this can vary based on how well the bag is resealed and stored. If you freeze the chips, they can last upwards of 6-8 months, but be prepared for a slight change in texture.
How do you tell if corn chips is bad?
Corn chips are pretty straightforward to check if they've gone bad. The easiest way is to take a good sniff. Bad or stale chips will have a slightly off smell that isn’t necessarily rotten, but it’s noticeably different from the corn chip smell we all know and love. The next step is the taste test. If they taste stale or have an 'off' flavor, they're past their prime. Lastly, if there’s any visible mold or funky colors on the chips, discard them immediately.
Tips for storing corn chips to extend shelf life
• Store the chips in a cool, dark, dry place to keep them crispy and fresh longer.
• Reseal the bag tightly after each use to prevent air from getting in. You can also transfer them to an air-tight container for optimal storage.
• If you have a large bag of chips, consider dividing it into smaller zip lock bags or containers. This way, opening the bag to munch on a few chips won't expose the whole bag to moisture and air.
• Freezing is an option, but it can change the texture, making the chips less crispy. If you do freeze them, be sure to use a freezer bag and remove as much air as possible before sealing. To defrost, simply let them sit at room temperature.
