Expiration & Storage Tips
When does canned chili expire?
Unopened canned chili can last 2-5 years beyond the printed date on the packaging if stored in a cool, dark pantry. Once opened, you should transfer any uneaten chili to a sealed container and store it in the refrigerator where it will stay fresh for about a week. If you freeze your leftover chili, it can last for 4 to 6 months.
How do you tell if canned chili is bad?
If your chili has an off-smell, definitely discard it. Other possible signs of spoiling are a change in the color, texture, or taste. If a can is leaking, rusting, bulging, or violently spurts out liquid when opened, don't consume its contents. Those are signs of the dangerous bacteria that causes botulism.
Tips for storing canned chili to extend shelf life
• Always store canned chili in a cool, dark place prior to opening.
• After opening, refrigerate in a sealed container. To identify the product easily, label the container with the content and date.
• If freezing, consider using a freezer safe bag to save space. Again, label with contents and date.
• When consuming part of a can, never store the leftover chili in the opened can. Transfer it to a food-safe resealable container. This keeps the chili from taking on a metal taste from the can and prevents it from spurring faster bacterial growth.
