Expiration & Storage Tips
When does portobello mushroom expire?
Unopened fresh portobello mushrooms can last up to 10 days in the refrigerator, but once you've opened the package air can speed up mold growth and they will generally only last around 7-10 days. If you've decided to freeze your portobellos (which isn't uncommon), they can be stored for up to 12 months in the freezer. When it comes to canned portobello mushrooms, they'll remain good for 1 year unopened in the pantry, and should be consumed within 2 weeks once opened and stored in the fridge.
How do you tell if portobello mushroom is bad?
The easiest way to tell if your portobello mushrooms have gone bad is by the color and smell. If they're slimy or have dark spots, it's time to toss them. Mushrooms should not emit a strong odor; when they begin to smell sour or unpleasant, they are no longer fresh. If you've happened to freeze your mushrooms and you notice ice crystals forming inside the bag, or the mushrooms have become too soft, it's best to not consume them.
Tips for storing portobello mushroom to extend shelf life
• Clean your portobellos only before you're going to use them. Water can speed up the spoiling process.
• Store fresh mushrooms in paper bags rather than plastic. The paper will absorb extra moisture and keep the mushrooms dry, preventing them from getting slimy.
• If freezing, it's best to blanch the mushrooms first for two minutes in boiling water, then drain, cool, and freeze.
• To rehydrate frozen mushrooms, place them in a bowl with warm water, wine or broth and soak until they are soft.
• For canned mushrooms, once the can is opened, transfer any leftovers into a glass or plastic airtight container and store in the refrigerator.
