Expiration & Storage Tips
When does fresh turmeric expire?
Fresh turmeric can last for about one to two weeks in the refrigerator. If it's unopened and kept in a cool, dark pantry, it can last up to a month. Once the turmeric is cut open, it’s better to use it within a few days to retain its freshness and potency. If it's frozen, the shelf life extends up to six months. For the turmeric that’s used in making dishes like curries and stews, consider using it within a few hours of preparation for optimal flavor.
How do you tell if fresh turmeric is bad?
You can tell if fresh turmeric has gone bad by its appearance, smell and taste. Aged turmeric roots will develop dark spots and shrivel, and might ooze a sort of liquid. It would have lost its vibrant orange hue, becoming dark and unattractive. Turmeric that has gone bad also develops a musty smell as opposed to its usual earthy aroma. Upon tasting, if it gives off a sour or unpleasant flavor, discard it.
Tips for storing fresh turmeric to extend shelf life
• Store fresh turmeric roots in the refrigerator, ideally in a zip-lock bag or an airtight container. This keeps them crisp and prevents them from drying out.
• For longer storage, you can freeze them. Before freezing, peel the skin off and cut the turmeric into small chunks or grate them. Pack the grated or diced turmeric into ice cube trays, fill with water, and take out and use as needed for your recipes.
• Keep your turmeric away from heat and sunlight. A cool, dark pantry is ideal for its storage.
• Avoid cutting the turmeric until you're ready to use it. Once cut, the turmeric begins to lose its potency quickly.
