Expiration & Storage Tips
When does mustard oil expire?
Unopened, a bottle of mustard oil can last up to a year, provided it’s stored in a cool, dark place away from sunlight, heat, and moisture. The 'best before' date printed on the bottle is usually a reliable guide. Once opened, mustard oil should be consumed within six months—as exposure to oxygen can cause the oil to become rancid. If you've decided to freeze mustard oil, it can last for two years or more, while always maintaining the original quality. When ready to use, simply defrost it at room temperature. However, freezing is not a typical preservation method for this kind of oil.
How do you tell if mustard oil is bad?
When mustard oil goes bad, it generally gives off a sour or stale smell, instead of its characteristic pungent but pleasant aroma. Also, the taste becomes off or bitter rather than sharp and slightly spicy. The color might change to a darker shade or become cloudy. Sometimes, you might also notice mold or other types of changes in appearance.
Tips for storing mustard oil to extend shelf life
• Store in a cool, dry, and dark place—away from heat and sunlight which can affect its shelf life and quality.
• Once opened, it’s best to use mustard oil within six months. Make sure to close the lid firmly after use to limit exposure to air.
• If you’re storing opened mustard oil in the refrigerator, take it out and wait for a while before using it, as cold oil will be too thick and won't pour easily.
• Reusing the oil multiple times for frying can degrade its quality. It’s best to use fresh oil each time for health reasons.
• Lastly, always handle the oil with clean, dry hands or utensils to prevent contamination.
