Expiration & Storage Tips
When does diced pimentos expire?
Unopened diced pimentos usually have a shelf life of about 2 years from the printed date on the package, thanks to the preserving power of acidic brine they're packed in. However, once the jar or can is opened, the shelf life decreases to about 1-2 weeks when stored in the refrigerator. Frozen diced pimentos can last for up to a year but their texture may become mushy upon defrosting due to their high water content.
How do you tell if diced pimentos is bad?
A very straightforward way to tell if your pimentos have gone bad is by their smell and appearance. If they develop a sour or off smell, that's a sign of spoilage. Other signs of spoilage include a change in color, generally getting darker, and a slimy or moldy appearance. You may also notice that the texture has become mushy or the brine has turned cloudy.
Tips for storing diced pimentos to extend shelf life
• Always store unopened canned or jarred diced pimentos in a cool and dark place, such as a pantry, away from heat sources.
• Transfer the pimentos along with their brine to an airtight container once opened and keep it in the refrigerator.
• If you have a large jar of pimentos that you can't use up quickly, consider separating them into smaller portions and freezing them for later use.
• Remember to practice the 'first-in, first-out' rule. Use older jars of pimentos first before opening new ones.
