Expiration & Storage Tips
When does cavatappi pasta expire?
Unopened cavatappi pasta in a sealed package can last up to two years beyond the printed date on the package, kept in a cool, dry place. Once opened, it's best to use the pasta within one to two years if stored properly. Pasta doesn't freeze well in its uncooked state because it can develop a chewy, unpleasant texture upon cooking. However, if you've cooked too much cavatappi pasta, you can freeze it for about one to two months without quality loss.
How do you tell if cavatappi pasta is bad?
Cavatappi pasta is relatively easy to identify if it's gone bad. There are signs you can look for: a significant change in color, usually faded or darker; a strange or off-putting smell; or a moldy appearance. Also, if it's been stored improperly – say in a damp or humid space – bugs can infest the product, which is a sure sign it’s time to throw it out.
Tips for storing cavatappi pasta to extend shelf life
• Keep opened cavatappi pasta in an airtight container. It will keep it safe from pests and humidity.
• Store the pasta in a cool, dark, and dry place like your kitchen pantry or a cabinet away from the stove or oven.
• Don't store pasta in the refrigerator unless it's cooked, as this can accelerate the staling process.
• Cooked cavatappi pasta can be refrigerated for up to five days. Make sure to cool the pasta completely before placing it in an airtight container and storing it in the fridge.
• If you need to freeze cooked pasta, let it cool completely, then store it in a freezer-safe bag or container. To defrost, let it thaw in the refrigerator, then reheat in a sauce or in the microwave.
