Expiration & Storage Tips
When does chicken consomme expire?
Commercially packaged chicken consomme typically lasts unopened for up to two years from the manufacturing date; always check the 'best by' or 'use by' date printed on the container. Once opened, chicken consommé should be used within 3 to 4 days when kept in the refrigerator. Homemade chicken consomme has a similar lifespan, usually safe for consumption for up to 4 days when properly refrigerated. If you choose to freeze chicken consomme, it can extend its shelf life up to 6 months.
How do you tell if chicken consomme is bad?
Several indications can help determine whether chicken consommé has spoiled. The first sign would be a strong, sour odor. You might also notice a change in color or texture, including cloudiness or a gel-like substance on top. It's also not uncommon for mold to appear when the food has been left to spoil. Any of these signs suggest the consommé has gone bad and should immediately be discarded.
Tips for storing chicken consomme to extend shelf life
• Always store chicken consommé in a sealed, airtight container.
• Keep it refrigerated at or below 4°C (40°F).
• To extend the shelf life, consider dividing the consommé into smaller, manageable portions before storing. This way, you only need to heat what you need and leave the rest undisturbed, reducing the food's exposure to heat and air.
• If you plan to freeze the consommé, make sure to leave some space for expansion in your storage container to avoid leaks and cracks. To thaw, leave it in the fridge overnight or use the defrost function on your microwave.
