Expiration & Storage Tips
When does turkey stock expire?
Turkey stock typically has a shelf-life of about 4 to 5 days in the refrigerator once opened or made at home. An unopened store-bought package usually lasts about one year past the printed expiration date provided it's kept in a cool, dark place. When frozen, turkey stock can be good for up to 6 months.
How do you tell if turkey stock is bad?
A good turkey stock should be a rich, clear liquid. If it smells sour, tangy, or off in any way, it has most likely gone bad. Similarly, if the stock has developed a cloudy appearance or shows signs of mildew growth, trash it right away. If it's been in the refrigerator for more than 7 days, it's best to discard it as it’s passed the safety window.
Tips for storing turkey stock to extend shelf life
• Keep the stock in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This helps in preventing contamination and extends the shelf life.
• Remember to cool the stock before storing it. Hot stock can increase the temperature of the refrigerator, potentially compromising the quality of other food products.
• For longer-term storage, consider freezing the stock. You can freeze it in ice-cube trays and then transfer them to a freezer bag. That way, you can just take out and use as many cubes as you need, thus minimizing wastage.
• If you're often in a rush, consider storing the stock in small, individual-use portions. This way, you can just grab what you need without having to thaw or reheat a larger volume of stock. This minimizes time and exposure to room temperature, which can promote bacterial growth.
