Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Lentil Soup expire?
Unopened, store-bought Lentil Soup will generally stay at best quality for about 3 to 5 years, if the can is undamaged. But remember, this is only the best by date. If stored properly, it can last longer. Once it's opened, refrigerate in a covered glass or plastic container and consume within 4 to 5 days. If you've prepared the soup at home, you can refrigerate it for up to a week. Homemade Lentil Soup can also be frozen and should be used within 2 to 3 months for the best quality.
How do you tell if Lentil Soup is bad?
Check for any significant changes in color, smell, and texture. If the soup has become thinner and there's a change in color, it's a sign that it may be bad. The development of mold and a sour or off smell is a sure sign that your Lentil Soup has spoiled. Additionally, if the canned soup is leaking, rusting, bulging, or severely dented, discard it immediately for safety reasons.
Tips for storing Lentil Soup to extend shelf life
• Always let the soup cool down before refrigerating or freezing. Placing hot soup in the fridge can lower the overall temperature of the fridge, compromising the safety of other food.
• When freezing, be sure to leave some space at the top of the container as the soup will expand.
• Store Lentil Soup at the back of the fridge rather than the door to ensure it remains a consistent temperature.
• Use airtight containers for storage. Glass containers are often the best option as they do not absorb flavors and are resistant to temperature changes.
• Freeze lentil soup in individual portions so you can defrost just what you need, reducing waste and making meal times easier.
• Remember to defrost frozen soup in the fridge and use it within 24 hours. You can reheat only once, so make sure you only thaw what you'll eat.
