Expiration & Storage Tips
When does flavored syrup expire?
Flavored syrups can last anywhere from one year to three years if they remain unopened. This is generally much longer than the 'best by' date printed on the packaging. Once opened, it needs to be stored in the fridge and should be consumed within 6 months to a year. If homemade, use within two weeks when stored in the fridge. You could also freeze flavored syrups, which extends their life to about a year. But remember, always defrost in the fridge before use, rather than at room temperature to prevent any potential bacterial growth.
How do you tell if flavored syrup is bad?
First off, note any changes in color, a darker shade may indicate that the syrup has started to spoil. If you notice any mold, cloudiness or crystals forming at the bottom, this is a sure sign it has gone bad. Off smells are another indicator, if it smells anything other than the expected sweet scent, it’s likely spoiled. Lastly, taste a small portion, if it tastes sour or off, it is best to throw it out for safety.
Tips for storing flavored syrup to extend shelf life
• Always store flavored syrup in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight when unopened.
• Once opened, it is best to store it in the refrigerator to slow the fermentation process. This will help maintain its freshness and flavor for the longest time possible.
• Make sure the cap is tightly sealed after each use to reduce exposure to bacteria and air, which can lead to faster spoilage.
• Don't put any spoons or utensils directly into the syrup bottle, as this may introduce bacteria and speed up spoilage.
• In case you have a large amount of syrup that cannot be consumed quickly, consider freezing it in smaller quantities. The syrup doesn't freeze solid, which means you can pour out what you need, then return the rest to the freezer.
