Expiration & Storage Tips
When does rose water expire?
Unopened, a bottle of rose water can last about two to three years if stored in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. However, once opened, the lifespan decreases to approximately six months to one year - always check the printed date on the package. Factors like heat and constant opening and closing can speed up the degradation process. If you decided to freeze the rose water (although it's not a common method), it can potentially extend its longevity, though it may slightly alter the scent and taste after defrosting.
How do you tell if rose water is bad?
Look out for changes in the color and smell of the rose water to tell if it has spoiled. Fresh, good-quality rose water is clear and has a light, floral scent. If it darkens or develops a sour or foul smell, it's time to discard it. Additionally, any signs of mold or changes in texture are also indicators that the rose water has expired.
Tips for storing rose water to extend shelf life
• Always store your rose water in a cool, dry spot away from sunlight or heat. The pantry or a kitchen cupboard are ideal places.
• After use, make sure the lid is tightly secured to prevent exposure to air, which can speed up the degrading process.
• Keep a lookout for changes in color, smell, or texture. If you notice anything off about your rose water, it's best to dispose of it, rather than take a risk.
• Although not common, if you choose to refrigerate or freeze your rose water, remember to leave some room in the container as it will expand. Defrost naturally at room temperature before reusing.
