Expiration & Storage Tips
When does rose petals expire?
Rose petals have different expiration guidelines depending upon how they are stored. If you purchase dried rose petals, these can last for about 1 to 2 years when stored correctly. After opening the original packaging, they should be used within 6 months for best flavor. Fresh rose petals will only last a few days before wilting and losing their scent. If you have frozen rose petals, they can be safely stored for up to 6 months.
How do you tell if rose petals is bad?
The easiest way to tell if rose petals have gone bad is by looking at their color and smell. Fresh rose petals that are wilting, brown or have a slimy texture should not be used. For dried rose petals, if they have lost their color and fragrance, it might be time to dispose them. There should be no signs of mold or pests. Frozen rose petals that have a freezer burn or a strange odor have also likely gone bad.
Tips for storing rose petals to extend shelf life
• Always store fresh rose petals in the refrigerator to prolong their life. Place them gently in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel.
• Dried rose petals should be stored in an air-tight container away from light, heat, and humidity. The pantry can often be a good storage place.
• For longer storage, consider freezing rose petals. They can be spread in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and frozen, then transferred to a freezer-safe container or bag.
• Always handle rose petals gently to avoid bruising them, as this can lead to quicker decay.
