Expiration & Storage Tips
When does sparkling wine expire?
Unopened sparkling wine can last for 3 to 5 years if stored properly, but it's best to consume it within 1 to 3 years to enjoy its full flavor. Once opened, however, it can only last 1 to 3 days when refrigerated. Beware though, some people can drink it even if it's 'flat' but its flavor and quality have greatly deteriorated. Freezing sparkling wine is not recommended as the carbonation process could cause the bottle to explode. The printed date on the package is a reliable guide, but it can still go bad if not properly handled or stored.
How do you tell if sparkling wine is bad?
An off smell is the first sign that the sparkling wine has gone bad. It may smell vinegary, musty, or rotten. The taste is also a clue. Once it loses its carbonated fizz and fresh, fruity flavor, it's probably past its prime. Lastly, observe its color. If it's turned into a dark, deep yellow or brown shades, it may have gone bad.
Tips for storing sparkling wine to extend shelf life
• Store unopened sparkling wine in a cool, dark place, with a temperature around 40-60°F and 50-75% humidity. Ideally, it should be stored in a wine cooler or fridge.
•Always store sparkling wine on its side. This keeps the cork moist, preventing it from drying out and letting in air which could cause the wine to oxidize.
• After opening, seal the bottle with a dedicated wine stopper to preserve its bubbles. Refrigerate it immediately and make sure it's consumed within 1-3 days.
• Avoid storing the bottle near strong odors, such as in a fridge with strong-smelling food. Wine can absorb odors easily, affecting its taste.
• Don't shake the bottle before opening! This can lead to an explosion and loss of the precious fizzy liquid.
