Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Horchata expire?
Store-bought, unopened horchata typically lasts for about a week past the sell-by date. Once opened, it usually stays fresh for 2-5 days when kept in the refrigerator. Homemade horchata, on the other hand, should ideally be consumed within the same day of preparation. However, it can last in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Freezing horchata may affect its quality and consistency.
How do you tell if Horchata is bad?
Horchata that has gone bad will usually smell sour, similar to spoiled milk. Also, if you pour it and observe any clumps, chunks, or separated layers, these are clear signs that the horchata is no longer good. The taste, too, will be off, generally sour or rancid.
Tips for storing Horchata to extend shelf life
• Always store horchata in the refrigerator.
• If you're making homemade horchata, make sure to strain it thoroughly before storing to improve its lifespan.
• Always use a clean utensil to pour or mix your horchata to prevent introduction of bacteria.
• Use an airtight container to store your horchata, as this helps keep it fresh for longer.
• Do not let horchata sit out at room temperature for more than 2 hours, as this could encourage bacterial growth.
