Expiration & Storage Tips
When does saffron expire?
Saffron possesses a remarkable longevity when it comes to its shelf life. Unopened, it can be stored for up to four years. If you consider the 'best by' date on the packaging, it's safe to say that saffron can last even a year beyond that if stored properly. Once you have opened your saffron container, anticipate it to last for up to two years, provided you store it as recommended. However, remember that over time, its taste and color might diminish gradually. Do note that saffron isn’t typically frozen in regular home kitchens.
How do you tell if saffron is bad?
To figure out if your saffron has gone bad, rely heavily on your senses. Discoloration and a lack of fragrance are clear red flags. Saffron should always maintain a bright red-orange color and a strong, distinctive aroma. If it appears dull or faded and doesn't emit its classic scent, it’s time you discard it. Also, if moisture gets into the saffron, being a dry product, it might encourage mold growth, which is a clear sign of spoilage.
Tips for storing saffron to extend shelf life
• Store saffron in a tight-sealed, opaque, and airtight container to help shield it from air and light exposure, both of which can degrade its quality over time.
• Keep your container of saffron in a cool, dry, dark location which can be a pantry or a cabinet, away from heat, humidity, and any light source.
• Saffron threads maintain their aroma better than ground saffron, hence opt for purchasing threads if possible. If you do have ground saffron, consume it at a faster rate to enjoy optimal flavor.
