Expiration & Storage Tips
When does chaat masala expire?
Chaat masala usually lasts long if stored properly, generally around two years unopened. Once opened, its potency and flavor begin to decline and it should ideally be used within six months. However, it can still be safe to consume for up to a year, but you might need to use more to achieve the same flavor profile. As for a homemade version of chaat masala, its freshness can be maintained for only about a month. Though not common, you could also freeze chaat masala which can extend its shelf life to approximately three years.
How do you tell if chaat masala is bad?
If your chaat masala has gone bad, you'll likely spot a number of indicators. The vibrant, earthy color might fade to a dull brown, and the usually pungent and tangy aroma might become weak, or even develop an off-smell. If you taste a small pinch, it could have a stale or flat taste rather than its typical spicy and tangy flavor. In some cases, you'll notice clumping or even signs of insect infestation, which are clear signals that it's time to replace your batch of chaat masala.
Tips for storing chaat masala to extend shelf life
• Always store your chaat masala in an airtight container, as exposure to air can speed up the process of losing flavor.
• Keep the spice blend in a cool, dark and dry area of your kitchen, away from direct sunlight. Heat, light and moisture can lead to degradation of its quality.
• Avoid using a wet spoon to take out the masala, as moisture can lead to clumping and might spoil your spices.
• For longer shelf life, you could freeze your chaat masala. Ensure it's well-sealed to prevent freezer burn and thaw it at room temperature when you need to use it.
• Consider making smaller batches of homemade chaat masala if you won't be using large amounts frequently. This way, you can always have a fresh and vibrant blend on hand.
