Expiration & Storage Tips
When does amchur expire?
Mango powder or amchur generally has a long shelf life, when unopened. It can stay fresh and usable up to two years from the manufacturing date if stored in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Once opened, amchur will maintain peak quality in your pantry for up to six months, though it may remain safe for usage thereafter, it might lose some of its tanginess and color. When freezer-stored, it can last even longer, indefinitely in most cases. However, it is rare for households to freeze amchur due to its already long shelf life.
How do you tell if amchur is bad?
Just as with any other powdered spices, determining if amchur has gone bad relies on sight, smell, and taste. The flavor should be tart and slightly sweet. If it tastes bitter or bland, it could have gone bad. It generally doesn't become harmful or rotten, but loses its distinct flavor and often becomes stale. In terms of its appearance, if the color has faded or looks dull compared to its original beige or light tan color, it might have lost its potency. Additionally, if it has developed any mold or if there are any bugs, it should be discarded immediately.
Tips for storing amchur to extend shelf life
• Ensure to store amchur in a sealed container to prevent air, moisture or bugs from getting in.
• It is best stored in a cool, dark pantry, away from any heat sources like stoves or ovens, as it may affect its flavor and shelf life.
• Avoid using a wet spoon to scoop out amchur, as moisture can quicken the loss of flavor and potency.
• If you rarely use amchur, consider buying in smaller quantities to ensure you always use a fresh product.
• After opening, try using it within 6 months to get the best flavor out of it.
