Expiration & Storage Tips
When does rice paper expire?
Before it has been opened, a packaged rice paper can last up to 2 years past the printed date on the package when kept in a cool and dry place. Once the package is opened, you can expect it to last about 6-9 months. However, if stored in a tightly sealed container to avoid moisture, the rice paper can keep for up to a year and a half.
How do you tell if rice paper is bad?
When rice paper goes bad, you will notice a noticeable change in its texture and appearance. It will start to harden and discolor, often developing yellow spots or speckles. Additionally, if it gives off an unpleasant, stale or musty odor, it's a good indication that it is no longer good to eat. Keep in mind that rice paper should be smooth, pliable and have a clean smell when it's in a good condition.
Tips for storing rice paper to extend shelf life
• Keep the rice paper in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The pantry is ideal.
• Once the package has been opened, seal it tightly or transfer the remaining rice paper to an airtight container to prevent it from going stale.
• If you live in a humid climate, consider storing rice paper in the refrigerator to keep it fresh longer.
• It is not recommended to freeze rice paper as it can affect its texture and make it brittle.
