Cook the linguini in a large pot of boiling salted water until al dente, then drain, reserving 1/2 cup of the pasta water.

In a large frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until the onion is translucent and the garlic is fragrant.

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the shrimp to the pan. Cook until the shrimp turns pink, about 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove the shrimp from the pan and set aside.

In the same pan, add the fresh basil pesto and heavy cream. Stir until the cream is well incorporated into the pesto to make a sauce.

Return the cooked linguini and seared shrimp to the pan, tossing to coat in the sauce. If needed, add in some of the reserved pasta water to loosen the sauce.

Mix in the finely grated lemon zest and half of the grated parmesan cheese.

Serve the pasta hot, topped with the remaining parmesan cheese.
