Expiration & Storage Tips
When does button mushroom expire?
In general, unopened fresh button mushrooms can last for about 7-10 days in the refrigerator. If the package has been opened, aim to use them within 7 days. Once cooked, you can save them for about 3-5 days in the refrigerator. As for freezing, it is possible, but the texture may become more mushy after thawing. Frozen button mushrooms can last for about 10-12 months.
How do you tell if button mushroom is bad?
Button mushrooms are bad if they've become slimy, wrinkled, or have darkened significantly in color. You might also notice a foul or sour smell. Any signs of mold are a clear indication that they have spoiled. Always trust your nose and eyes when examining the freshness of button mushrooms.
Tips for storing button mushroom to extend shelf life
• Store fresh button mushrooms in a paper bag, which can absorb excess moisture, in the refrigerator.
• Don't wash them until right before you plan to use them. Excess moisture can speed up the spoiling process.
• If you want to freeze button mushrooms, it's best to blanch them first to prevent the texture from becoming too soft. Cool them quickly in ice water after blanching, then drain and freeze.
• Defrost frozen mushrooms in the refrigerator, or directly use them in recipes without thawing. Remember, their texture might be a bit mushier after freezing, but they will still work well in cooked dishes.
