Expiration & Storage Tips
When does tangerine expire?
Fresh tangerines usually last for about 1-2 weeks at room temperature and about 2-3 weeks in the refrigerator. If you've kept them at room temperature and have not used them within a week, it's a good idea to move them to the fridge to extend their usability. Once cut or peeled, tangerines start to spoil. They typically last for 2-3 days in the refrigerator, although this can vary. A whole frozen tangerine can last for about 10-12 months, but the quality begins to decline after the first month. Keep in mind that tangerines may still be edible beyond these timeframes but the quality may be compromised.
How do you tell if tangerine is bad?
Telling if a tangerine has gone bad is usually quite easy. The most common signs of spoilage in tangerines include a squishy texture and a dull, wrinkled skin. A good tangerine should feel firm and have a vibrant orange color. If you see dark or discolored spots on the skin, it could be a sign of mold. Once cut or peeled, if the segments inside are overly dry or have lost their vibrant color, the tangerine may be past its prime. Smell can also be a good indicator. A rotten tangerine often has a sour or off smell.
Tips for storing tangerine to extend shelf life
• Always store tangerines in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
• If you are not planning to consume the tangerines within a week, consider storing them in the fridge. They retain their quality better in a low temperature and humidity-controlled environment.
• If freezing, wash and peel the tangerines. Remove any seeds and freeze the segments on a tray before transferring them to a sealed bag. This prevents the pieces from sticking together.
• Remember, once peeled or cut, a tangerine will spoil faster. If you have opened a tangerine and can’t consume it immediately, put it in a sealed container and store it in the fridge.
• Avoid storing tangerines next to ethylene-producing fruits like bananas and apples. Ethylene can speed up the ripening process and cause the tangerines to spoil faster.
