Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Succotash expire?
Succotash, a mixed vegetables dish often consisting of corn and lima beans, tends to vary with fresh, frozen and canned varieties. Homemade succotash made with fresh ingredients should be consumed within 3-5 days when refrigerated. Canned succotash can last years past the 'sell by' date if remains unopened and stored in a cool, dry pantry. Once it's opened it should be used within 3-5 days, even if refrigerated. Frozen succotash can last up to 8-10 months in the freezer for best quality, although it'll remain safe to consume beyond that timeframe.
How do you tell if Succotash is bad?
Look out for noticeable signs such as a change in color, an off smell or mold. With fresh succotash, if the vegetables are mushy, discolored or have a rotten smell, best to toss it out. If the canned succotash has bulging, rusted or seriously dented can, do not consume. For frozen, check for ‘freezer burn’ where dehydrated and oxidized spots may have formed in long term frozen storage, indicating it might not taste as good.
Tips for storing Succotash to extend shelf life
• Always store your succotash in shallow containers to ensure a faster cooling time and thus longer life.
• Canned succotash should be transferred into a plastic or glass container once opened and kept refrigerated.
• If freezing, use airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags to prevent freezer burn.
• For all varieties, it's best to reheat only the portion you intend to consume immediately - reheating multiple times can reduce the quality.
