Expiration & Storage Tips
When does brown lentils expire?
Unopened, brown lentils can last up to 1-2 years when stored properly, and don’t require a cool dark place like some other legumes. After being cooked, lentils should be consumed within a week. If you have cooked your lentils and want to freeze them, they can last up to 6 months before their flavor begins to change. Always check the date on the package, but rest assured if they're stored properly they usually last longer than that.
How do you tell if brown lentils is bad?
If your brown lentils smell moldy, musty, or sour, that's a clear sign they've spoiled. Look at their appearance - lentils that have developed a hazy or slimy coat should not be eaten. If the lentils are shriveled, hard, or have a hard coat that doesn't soften when soaked, it's likely they're past their prime. Lastly, any visible mold or signs of bugs signifies they are unsafe to eat.
Tips for storing brown lentils to extend shelf life
• Store uncooked lentils in a cool, dry, and dark place. A pantry or any dark storage space with airflow would be ideal.
• Put cooked lentils in an airtight container. Store them in the fridge to maintain their freshness.
• To freeze lentils, let them cool before transferring to a freezer bag. Push out any excess air before sealing and label the bag with the date.
• Before cooking frozen lentils, thaw them in the fridge overnight for the best results.
