Expiration & Storage Tips
When does canned crab meat expire?
The canned crab meat can last up to 3-5 years past the printed date on the package if left unopened and stored in a cool, dry place. Once opened, it's best to use the crab meat within 2-3 days if stored in the refrigerator. If the canned crab meat is frozen, it can extend the shelf life up to six months. However, it should be sealed tightly in an airtight container or heavy-duty freezer bag before freezing.
How do you tell if canned crab meat is bad?
Spoiled canned crab meat may have a sour or unpleasant odor, a slimy or notably different texture, and a change in color. If you notice any bulging or leakage in the can before opening, it's best to discard the can as it is a sign of bacterial infection. Similarly, if the can spurts liquid or foam upon opening, it is also a signal that the crab meat has gone bad. It is better to stay on the safe side and throw away any cans that have these signs, or if you have any doubts about the quality.
Tips for storing canned crab meat to extend shelf life
• Always store unopened cans of crab meat in a cool, dry place. The pantry or a kitchen cupboard, away from heat or direct sunlight, is best.
• Once opened, transfer any unused crab meat from the can to a glass or plastic airtight container and refrigerate immediately. Try to use it within 2-3 days.
• If you want to freeze canned crab meat, take it out from the can, put it into a freezer-safe bag or container, and press out as much air as possible before sealing to prevent freezer burns. It's best to use it within six months.
• Always check the expiration date on the can before purchasing, it's better to choose cans with the longest shelf life available.
• When using canned crab meat, always remember to thoroughly drain the liquid before adding the meat to your dishes.
