Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Pozole expire?
Pozole, a traditional Mexican soup, is always best fresh but can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days. If the pozole has been left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours, though, it should be discarded. If you've got leftovers that you won't consume within 5 days you can freeze them. They'll keep in the freezer for up to 6 months.
How do you tell if Pozole is bad?
There are a few signs to look out for if you think your pozole may have gone bad. It might have a sour, kind of 'off' smell, or it might have a funny taste. Also, if you notice any mold growth, then it's definitely time to toss it.
Tips for storing Pozole to extend shelf life
• Always store your pozole in airtight containers. This not only keeps it fresh but also prevents it from absorbing odors from other foods in your fridge.
• If you're going to freeze your pozole, let it cool down completely before placing it in the freezer. This will prevent the rapid temperature change that can lead to food spoilage.
• When reheating your pozole, bring it to a boil; this will kill any lingering bacteria and make it safe to eat again.
• Label your containers with the date you stored it, to keep track of how long it's been stored and when it should be used by.
